How to use the eBay VAT and Sales Tax Calculator
- Choose US sales tax or VAT.
- Enter the item price, shipping and tax rate.
- Add item and postage cost to see profit, then press Calculate.
Formula
US: fees are charged on item + shipping + sales tax; tax is passed to the state.
VAT: VAT = gross ÷ (1 + rate) × rate; profit = gross − eBay fees − VAT − costs.
Examples
- US, 100 + 10 shipping, 8% sales tax, default rates: buyer pays 118.80; the tax adds about 1.20 to eBay fees.
- VAT at 20% on a 110 VAT-inclusive total: VAT due 18.33, value excluding VAT 91.67.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the default rates come from?
From eBay’s official selling fees pages for eBay.com, for most categories with no store subscription, checked on 27 October 2026. Some categories (for example certain clothing, collectibles, jewellery or business equipment) and store subscribers pay different rates, so change the fields to match your case.
Do I need to charge sales tax myself on eBay.com?
eBay collects and remits sales tax for orders shipped to US states with marketplace facilitator laws. Check eBay’s tax policy and your local rules for your situation.
